CATHOLIC CEREMONY

The tradition of the Catholic rite, celebrated in the Church, wants the groom to wait at the altar with his witnesses for the bride to arrive.

The guests of the groom sit to the right and the ones of the brides to the left.

The bride arrives with her father (or with the closest male parent) and goes towards the altar were she is left to her future husband.

The bride, usually, is dressed in white with a veil that covers her face and that the future husband has to take off her once she arrives to the altar.

Once they arrive at the altar, the father will ideally leave her daughter to his future son in law, shaking his hand and he will sit in the front row, to the left.

The ritual takes place within the celebration of Mass, with four key moments:

  1. Renewal of baptismal promises
  2. Liturgy of marriage
  3. Blessing and delivery of the rings
  4. Blessing of the groom and the bride

The bride, at the moment of the rings exchange, will be the first one to give her hand.

Once they became and declared husband and wife, the guests can exit the Church and wait for them to throw rice and flowers petals.

INDIAN CEREMONY

On the Indian wedding day, where the ceremony will take place, a fire is lit under a large gazebo decorated with flowers. The groom arrives with his family and closest friends and is welcomed from the bride’s family.

The bride is usually dressed in red (auspicious color) or in green (fertility symbol).

During the ceremony, the bride and the grooms exchange flower wreaths, yogurt and honey, coconut, flowers petals and clarified butter.

The father of the bride, then, entrusts her daughter to the groom after the promise to assist the girl in the realization of the three sacred marriage purposes: moral duty, economic duty, and sexual and loving duty.

The couple, after having exchanged the rings, perform together seven steps around the sacred fire or along a path marked by seven mounds of rice, flowers and other symbols of prosperity and, at every step, they recite invocations and promises for their future married life .

At the end of this ritual, the groom and the bride are officially husband and wife and the groom puts a red powder on the bride’s forehead to symbolize her new status as a married woman.

  3. A tray of spices, in particular 7 types of spices to protect from the evil eye.

Moreover, during the ritual, there are two sugar and candied cones that are crumbled, during the ceremony, on the silk cloth held over the heads of the spouses by an unmarried female relative while a happily married relative grates sugar as a wish of a life full of sweetness. In a Persian wedding ceremony, music and the song that traditionally is played when the couple enters the room cannot be missing.

The officiant is a Rabbi and the ceremony will take place below the chuppah, a canopy consisting of a cloth and four poles, the cloth can be white or red with gold borders and also adorned with some element of the flower bouquet of bride.

The canopy symbolizes the future home of the couple. The first ones to arrive under the chuppàh are the rabbi, the groom, the male relatives and, in the end, the bride. The rabbi blesses a goblet of wine and pronounces a sermon to make the bride and groom drink from that same cup.

The exchange of the rings is not a Jewish use, but, before the reading, the groom will hand over, to the Rabbi, the ring he has purchased for the bride. A simple ring in yellow gold, characteristic of the beauty of a balanced marriage, which symbolizes the bond of eternal love that unites the couple and the protection that the bride will receive from her husband.

After the reading of the Rabbi, the spouses drink from the glass, which the groom places on the ground and brakes it by pounding it. This gesture recalls that no ceremony can be consider completely happy after the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem and the removal of the Jewish people from the Holy Land.
